The popularity of laser eye surgery is steadily increasing. During the earlier days of laser eye surgery, the rich and famous were the only ones who could’ve afforded this highly advanced surgery. But today, the surgery has become more popular. This increase and popularity ‘is due to the evolution of laser eye surgery in the past ten years’. The most common of laser eye surgery is the LASIK treatment. This treatment is more accurate and safer than ever.
Accordingly, ‘The American Association of Professional Eyecare Specialists (AAPECS) indicated that at approximately 85 per cent of patients have achieved vision correction with laser eye surgery. Additionally, 93 per cent of the ‘patients have achieved 20/40 vision improvement or vision acuity with the LASIK treatment. But the majority of these statistics are based on ‘results following immediately after the surgery’, meaning it does not take into account vision improvement after the recovery period has been completed.
The LASIK treatment is by far one of the most effective, popular, time-tested treatments of all laser eye surgical procedures. This particular surgery is primarily for patients who suffer from far sightedness, near sightedness, and astigmatism problems.
Traditionally, the LASIK procedure involves the use of a precise laser beam instrument which is used to cut a thin flap from the patient’s cornea surface. Basically, the ‘laser beam reshapes and removes any tiny irregularities from the inner layer of the patient’s eye which causes defective vision’. Relatively, the surgeon then replaces the flap and the patient’s eye is then expected to heal within one to two days.
Some recommendations for suitable candidates for the LASIK treatment are as follows: the patient must have healthy corneas, must be 18 years and older, no pregnant individuals, must not suffer from systemic illnesses such as diabetes, no auto immune diseases, must not endure eye related medical problems, does not intake drugs that suppresses the immune system, must have a myopic refraction -12 diopeters, and a hyperopic refraction +6 diopeters, and an astigmatism degree up to 4 diopeters.
Alternative surgical procedures besides LASIK have also experienced increased popularity. Before undergoing laser eye surgery, it is imperative that you consult your eye doctor so he would examine whether you are a suitable candidate for laser eye surgery or not. After your doctor has examined you, then you can make ‘an informed decision on which laser eye treatment is best for you’.
The popularity of laser eye surgery is steadily increasing to this day. However, when choosing the right laser eye procedure it is necessary that you consult your doctor for a thorough examination. After the consultation, your doctor will then decide whether you are a good candidate for the procedure. There are many laser eye procedures that patients can choose from. Aside from LASIK, there is the PRK, LASEK, and Conductive Keratoplasty treatment that you can choose from. Based on your present eye condition, your eye surgeon would assist you in choosing the right surgical procedure for your eye, and avoiding difficult consequences.
